To get to know him better, we asked Ruan a few questions about the exciting journey ahead.
You are a well-known property practitioner in South Africa. Tell us more about your career and what led you to the property industry.
I started my career as a Business Economics teacher at two prominent High Schools in Pretoria. In 2007, we bought a bond origination franchise, and due to the previous global recession, we were forced to diversify and start a rental agency in 2009.
In 2010 we bought an estate agency franchise in Pretoria East, which we merged into our own group in 2013, and have expanded into six provinces across SA.
What made you interested in taking this opportunity with MidCity Realty?
Collaboration is key – strategic partnerships are vital to not only survive, but thrive in business. MidCity is a reputable and established brand. Expanding our already vast service offering to our valued clients, to now also include property sales, is a no-brainer.
I’m passionate about sourcing and developing talent, so I’m really looking forward to growing this division with dynamic individuals, with a high focus on delivering exceptional customer service, through value-adding relationship-selling.
What excites you about the opportunity with the MidCity Group?
We’re offering an opportunity for professionals to join us, gain access to our systems, training and support, with opportunities to also market to our existing clientele. We offer very lucrative commission splits, and don’t charge “desk fees” or royalties. Flexible working hours and growth opportunities, without anyone micro-managing you, form part of the positive organisational culture. The cross-selling opportunities for agents and existing employees across the various businesses and departments within the group, is also a huge drawcard.
With your years of experience (16 years) in the property industry. What is the biggest lesson you have learnt so far?
People do business with like-minded individuals they trust. Trust is earned over time, and because buying/selling property is an emotional experience, people dislike estate agents who come across as manipulative and commission-chasing.
Doing proper needs analysis of your clients, going above and beyond to add value to each transaction, successfully serving buyers and sellers, and subsequently receiving positive feedback is a thrilling experience.
What will your focus be with MidCity Realty?
Building the right team and expanding our network of strategic partnerships within the industry. Reaching our sales targets will be a bonus.
